Overview
Jura is Switzerland's youngest canton, having been established in 1979 following its separation from the Canton of Bern after a decades-long political movement by the French-speaking, predominantly Catholic population of the northern Bernese Jura. With approximately 74,000 inhabitants spread across 839 km² of rolling hills and forested plateaus, it is one of Switzerland's smallest and least densely populated cantons.
The canton's economic identity is firmly rooted in precision industry. Watchmaking and microtechnology form the backbone of Jura's industrial sector, continuing a tradition that dates back over two centuries in the broader Jura Arc region. Companies like Tornos, Willemin-Macodel, and Fraisa are globally recognized specialists in machine tools and precision cutting instruments. This cluster of know-how in miniaturization and high-precision manufacturing feeds into adjacent sectors including medical devices, automotive components, and aerospace parts.
Agriculture remains more significant in Jura than in most Swiss cantons, with dairy farming, horse breeding (the Franches-Montagnes breed originates here), and increasingly, artisanal food production contributing to the local economy. Tourism plays a growing role, centered on the natural landscapes of the Franches-Montagnes plateau, the medieval old town of Saint-Ursanne, and a network of hiking and cycling routes.
The succession challenge in Jura is particularly pressing. With 35% of business owners over 55 and the canton's industrial tradition concentrated in specialized, family-owned workshops, the risk of knowledge loss and business closure is significant. The cantonal government and regional development agencies have launched programs to connect retiring owners with potential buyers, but the relatively remote location and smaller market size remain obstacles.
Infrastructure has improved substantially with the progressive completion of the A16 Transjurane motorway, connecting Jura to the national road network. The Haute école Arc provides applied research partnerships with local industry, particularly in microtechnology and engineering, helping to anchor innovation in the region despite its modest size.
