Overview

Thurgau stretches along the Swiss shore of Lake Constance between Schaffhausen and St. Gallen, with 302,806 residents, 149,746 jobs and 20,201 enterprises. GDP was CHF 20.3 billion in 2022, or CHF 70,504 per head. Employment grew by 6.6% between 2019 and 2024, and unemployment fell to 2.2% in August 2026 from 2.3% a year earlier, below the Swiss rate of 3.0%.

Thurgau combines farming with a strong industrial base. Agriculture, forestry and fishing employ 9,000 people, 2.1 times the Swiss share, and the food industry is also above average (1.7 times). Machinery, electrical and vehicle engineering accounts for 5.7% of jobs, the third-highest concentration of any canton: the train builder Stadler has its head office in Bussnang. Plastics, metals and metal products (2.2 times the Swiss share), textiles (1.6 times) and medical devices and other manufacturing (1.9 times, the third-highest concentration) complete the industrial profile. Other large employers include the packaging group Model and the Swiss arm of the discount retailer Lidl, both based in Weinfelden, and V-ZUG's refrigeration plant in Sulgen.

KPMG puts Thurgau's maximum effective corporate tax rate at 13.21% for 2026, below the Swiss average of 14.43%, and its top income tax rate at 31.74%. The median gross monthly wage in Eastern Switzerland was CHF 6,623 in 2024.
