Graubünden

Graubünden is Switzerland's largest canton by area and its only trilingual one, with German, Romansh and Italian as official languages. It has 207,400 residents, 142,755 jobs and 18,362 enterprises. GDP was CHF 16.7 billion in 2022, with real growth of 4.9%, the fourth-strongest of the 26 cantons, and GDP per head of CHF 82,817. Employment rose by 7.6% between 2019 and 2024, and unemployment was 1.1% in August 2026, the fifth-lowest rate in the country.

Tourism is the backbone of the economy. Hotels and restaurants are the canton's largest sector, with 19,651 jobs or 13.8% of employment, 2.9 times the Swiss share and the highest concentration of any canton; St. Moritz, Davos, Flims Laax and Arosa are among the best-known resorts, and Davos hosts the World Economic Forum's annual meeting. Construction (9.7%, 1.5 times the Swiss share), transport (1.2 times, the third-highest concentration) and energy (1.3 times) are also above average. The Rhaetian Railway, whose Albula and Bernina lines are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a major employer, and Repower in Brusio runs hydropower plants and energy trading. Industry is concentrated in the Rhine valley near Chur, where EMS-Chemie makes high-performance polymers in Domat/Ems and Hamilton builds laboratory automation and medical devices in Bonaduz.

KPMG puts Graubünden's maximum effective corporate tax rate at 14.77% for 2026 and its top income tax rate at 31.30%, down from 31.63% in 2025. The median gross monthly wage in Eastern Switzerland was CHF 6,623 in 2024.
