Overview
Uri is one of Switzerland's smallest cantonal economies: 38,581 residents, GDP of CHF 2.2 billion in 2022, 19,649 jobs and 2,531 enterprises. GDP per head of CHF 58,392 is the lowest of the 26 cantons. The labour market is nonetheless among the tightest in the country: unemployment was 0.9% in August 2026, the second-lowest rate after Appenzell Innerrhoden.
Hydropower, industry and the Gotthard corridor shape the economy. Energy, water, waste and mining account for 3.3% of jobs, the highest share of any canton, and plastics, metals and metal products for 6.2%, 2.6 times the national weight; the sealing-components group Dätwyler has its holding company in Altdorf. Hotels and restaurants (8.7%), construction (9.5%) and agriculture (7.0%) are all above the Swiss average. In Andermatt, Andermatt Swiss Alps is developing a year-round mountain resort.
KPMG puts Uri's maximum effective corporate tax rate at 12.64% for 2026, below the Swiss average of 14.43%, and its top income tax rate at 25.34%. In ValIndex's ownership study, 61.3% of Uri GmbHs belong to a single person, the second-highest share in Switzerland, although the sample is small.

KPMG's Clarity on Swiss Taxes 2026 puts the maximum effective corporate income tax rate in Altdorf (federal, cantonal and communal taxes combined) at 12.64% (2025: 12.64%): rank 5 of 26, counting from the lowest rate (Swiss average: 14.43%). The maximum income tax rate for a single person, including federal tax, is 25.34%: rank 6 of 26, counting from the lowest rate (average: 33.04%).
