Uri

The Canton of Uri is one of Switzerland's smallest and most alpine cantons, with a population of just 37,200 spread across 1,077 square kilometres of predominantly mountainous terrain. Located at the heart of the Swiss Alps and the historic gateway to the Gotthard Pass, Uri holds deep symbolic significance as one of the three founding cantons of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Its economy, while modest in absolute terms at approximately CHF 3.5 billion in GDP, is characterised by resilience, resourcefulness, and a strategic position on Europe's most important north-south transit corridor.

The Gotthard axis is Uri's defining economic feature. The opening of the Gotthard base tunnel in 2016, the world's longest railway tunnel at 57 kilometres, cemented the canton's role as a critical link in European freight and passenger transit. SBB operations related to the Gotthard corridor represent a significant local employer. The A2 motorway, which traverses the canton, carries substantial heavy-goods traffic between northern Europe and Italy, supporting a local logistics and transport services sector.

Uri's industrial base is anchored by Dätwyler Holding, an internationally active manufacturer of industrial sealing and polymer components headquartered in Altdorf. Dätwyler is one of the few globally competitive industrial firms based in a small alpine canton, employing over 1,200 people locally. Beyond Dätwyler, the manufacturing sector consists of smaller metalworking, construction materials, and precision engineering firms serving regional markets.

Hydropower is a distinctive pillar of Uri's economy. The canton's steep valleys and abundant water resources make it one of Switzerland's most productive hydroelectric regions. The Elektrizitätswerk Altdorf (EWA) and other utilities generate significant renewable energy, and hydropower concession revenues contribute meaningfully to cantonal finances.

Construction is disproportionately important to Uri's economy, driven by ongoing infrastructure maintenance along the Gotthard corridor, avalanche protection works, and residential construction. Agriculture and forestry remain significant, with cattle farming and dairy production forming the backbone of the rural economy, particularly in the Urserental and Schächental valleys.

Tourism, while smaller than in neighbouring cantons, benefits from the Andermatt-Sedrun ski resort, which has seen substantial investment from Egyptian billionaire Samih Sawiris. This development has brought international hospitality brands and year-round tourism infrastructure to a canton that previously relied on seasonal visitors.

Uri's tax environment is highly competitive, with an effective corporate rate of 12.6 percent that places it among Switzerland's top five lowest-tax cantons. This, combined with very low personal tax burdens, is designed to offset the canton's limited talent pool and rural character. Unemployment is virtually non-existent at 0.8 percent. The succession challenge is proportionally acute: over 36 percent of business owners are above 55, and the small population base makes finding local successors particularly difficult.
