Watchmaking remains an important economic pillar, with ETA SA (Swatch Group) and Breitling maintaining their production bases in Grenchen. While the sector has consolidated from its historical peak, it continues to sustain hundreds of specialized component manufacturers and finishing workshops across the Leberberg and Wasseramt districts.

Solothurn's broader industrial base includes metalworking, construction engineering, and a growing logistics sector anchored by Olten's railway hub function. The canton serves as a cost-effective production location for firms supplying the Basel pharma cluster and the Bern region, with real estate and wage costs notably lower than either neighboring center.

The succession challenge is acute: with 34% of owners over 55, Solothurn has one of the highest at-risk ratios in Switzerland. Many precision manufacturing firms employ 20-100 workers with highly specialized know-how that is difficult to replace. The MedTech sector's quality requirements (ISO 13485, FDA compliance) add complexity to transitions. Despite a corporate tax rate of 21.4% that places the canton near the bottom of Swiss tax competitiveness rankings, Solothurn compensates with affordable operations, outstanding transport connectivity, and access to a deep pool of precision engineering talent forged over generations.
