Overview
The Canton of Zürich is the undisputed economic engine of Switzerland, generating over CHF 155 billion in gross domestic product and accounting for more than one-fifth of the nation's total economic output. Home to approximately 1.58 million residents, it is both the most populous canton and the country's primary international business gateway.
Zürich's economy is built on an extraordinarily diversified foundation. The financial sector, anchored by global institutions such as UBS, Zurich Insurance Group, and Swiss Re, has long been the canton's flagship industry. Together with the Swiss National Bank and over 80 foreign banks maintaining offices in the city, Zürich ranks among the world's top five financial centres. However, the canton has successfully broadened its economic base over the past two decades. The technology sector has experienced explosive growth, with Google's largest engineering office outside the United States now located in Zürich, alongside hundreds of homegrown startups in areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cybersecurity.
The life sciences corridor stretching from Schlieren to the city centre hosts a growing cluster of biotech and medtech firms that benefit from proximity to ETH Zürich and the University of Zürich, two of Europe's leading research institutions. This academic infrastructure produces a highly skilled workforce: nearly half the canton's working population holds a tertiary degree, the highest proportion in the country.
Despite above-average corporate tax rates compared to low-tax cantons like Zug or Lucerne, Zürich continues to attract firms thanks to its unmatched ecosystem of talent, capital, and connectivity. Zürich Airport, the country's busiest, links the region to over 200 destinations worldwide. The SBB rail network radiates outward from the city, placing Basel, Bern, and Lucerne within 60-90 minutes.
The canton's SME landscape is vibrant, with over 92,000 enterprises, 99 percent of which are small and medium-sized. Net company formation has remained positive, reflecting entrepreneurial dynamism. Yet roughly 12,500 owner-managed firms face a succession question in the coming years as baby-boomer founders approach retirement, creating substantial demand for M&A advisory, business valuation, and transition planning services.
Zürich's labour market remains tight, with unemployment around 2.4 percent and strong demand for IT specialists, financial professionals, and engineers. Median monthly salaries exceed CHF 7,200, reflecting the high productivity and cost-of-living environment that characterise the greater Zürich area.
